Sync keeps your budget up to date across your devices automatically. It requires a HamsterBudget account and a sync subscription. Subscribe in the account portal, or directly in the app on iPhone and iPad. Your budget works on Mac, iPhone and iPad without either one.

The short answers.
Do I need a subscription?
No. The macOS app is a one-time purchase. On iPhone and iPad, try all features free for 30 days, then unlock the full version with a separate one-time purchase. A subscription is only needed for optional device sync.
How do I back up my budget?
Your budget is stored in a local .budget file. Keep a backup on another storage device. Device sync does not replace your own backup.
Do I need to connect my bank account?
No. You enter accounts and transactions yourself. HamsterBudget does not need access to your online banking.
Where is my budget stored?
In a local .budget file on your device. You decide where to store it and how to back it up.
Does HamsterBudget work offline?
Yes. All core budgeting features work locally without an internet connection.
Can I use desktop and iOS together?
Yes. With optional device sync, your budget stays up to date on all your devices automatically. Without sync, transfer your .budget file yourself, for example with AirDrop. In that case, close the budget before switching devices and edit it on only one device at a time. The Mac license and the iOS full version are purchased separately.
Which systems are supported?
macOS 13 or later on Apple Silicon Macs (M-series chips), iOS 18 or later on iPhone and iPadOS 18 or later on iPad. Windows and Linux versions will follow.
Can I bring an existing budget with me?
A guided import transfers BudgetWithBuckets files into a new or empty budget.
What does my license cover?
One desktop license covers one person on up to five devices. At launch, HamsterBudget is available for macOS on Apple Silicon. It is a one-time purchase; the iOS app is purchased separately. Initial license activation requires an internet connection.
Which updates are included?
Updates are included in your desktop license.
What happens when I cancel sync?
Cancel a sync subscription purchased on the website in the account portal, and one purchased through Apple in iPhone Settings under “Subscriptions”. Sync continues until the end of the paid period; after that, your devices are no longer kept in sync. Your local budgets are retained.
